Santee Cooper line crews begin restoration effort

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – Santee Cooper line crews began restoring power outages on the utility’s retail and transmission systems this morning, with some distribution crews hitting the road as early as 6 a.m. That work will continue, with additional crews, equipment and helicopter patrols joining the effort as wind conditions permit.

Santee Cooper recorded 50,310 customer outages on its retail system early this morning. As of 10 a.m., some 40,818 customers are without power in our service territories in Horry, Georgetown and Berkeley counties.

The transmission system has six lines locked out that are impacting customers of Santee Cooper and four electric cooperatives: Horry, Marlboro, Lynches River and Pee Dee. Transmission crews are patrolling the lines in trucks, to begin identifying issues, and will deploy helicopter patrols as wind conditions permit.

Customers are urged to stay on the lookout for downed power lines and other safety hazards:

  • Never touch, drive over or try to move a downed power line or anything the line is touching. The line could still be live even if it doesn't appear to be energized. Call Santee Cooper at 1-888-769-7688 to report downed power lines. Customers can also report power outages at that number or at http://stormcenter.santeecooper.com.
  • To ensure your safety and the safety of our line technicians, electric generators should be operated according to strict guidelines. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions completely. Never connect the portable generator to existing house wiring. Connect the generator directly to appliances. Operate generators outside; they emit harmful fumes and contain combustible fuel. Add fuel to the generator only when it is not running and has had time to sufficiently cool. Always properly ground the generator before operating. Refer to the owner's manual for specific instructions.
