Waccamaw River begins overtopping Ash Pond 1

Conway, S.C. – The flooding Waccamaw River began overtopping the dike around Ash Pond 1, at the former Grainger Generating Station site, at approximately 9 a.m. today. The overtopping occurred along the intake canal wall of the dike, and river water has begun to flow into the pond.

Santee Cooper has already excavated nearly all of the ash in Pond 1, and so there is no significant environmental impact expected at this time. Over the past week, Santee Cooper has also pumped water into the pond to balance the rising river levels. Experts believe this action means the structural integrity of the submerged dike will likely not be compromised by the overtopping.

Santee Cooper personnel will continue to monitor and inspect the pond and respond as needed. Baseline pond and river sampling has been conducted, and crews will begin to take post-event water samples as coordinated with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control and downstream water treatment plants.
