Santee Cooper’s Bill is Lowest

Santee Cooper’s rates are competitive at the residential, commercial and industrial level, and lower than the state and national averages. What this means for Santee Cooper’s typical residential customer is a monthly bill that is lower than the bills for any other large utility serving South Carolina. And that customer will enjoy that low spot well into the future.

In fact, Santee Cooper plans no rate increase until at least 2021, and our last rate increase dates back to April 2017. Other utilities have rate hikes underway or already planned before 2021.

According to information compiled by the South Carolina Office of Regulatory Staff, that typical Santee Cooper customer consuming 1,000 kilowatt-hours a month is saving up to 7 percent a month compared to customers of the shareholder-owned utilities in the state. Here is a look at those bill comparisons:

  • Santee Cooper - $117.63
  • Duke Energy Carolinas (DEC) - $117.74
  • Duke Energy Progress (DEP) - $125.43
  • Dominion/SCE&G - $124.91

Santee Cooper’s residential rates are 9 percent lower than the state average and 8 percent lower than the national average, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration data. Based on proposed rate increases that both Duke utilities have filed, and on announced plans by Santee Cooper and Dominion to increase rates in 2021, Santee Cooper’s typical residential bill will remain very competitive going forward:

  • Santee Cooper – $131 (by 2025; approximation includes projected fuel costs)
  • Duke Energy Carolinas - $132 (after June 1, 2019)
  • Duke Energy Progress - $143 (after June 1, 2019)
  • Dominion/SCE&G – TBD, more than $125

Moving forward, Santee Cooper and its employees remain committed to controlling costs and keeping rates competitive for the benefit of all our customers.
