CONWAY, S.C. - When the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers take on Eastern Michigan University on Aug. 31, the game will be powered by 100 percent Santee Cooper Green Power.

The game will be celebrated as a zero-waste game, sponsored by Horry County Solid Waste Authority. CCU’s sustainability team will work to divert the waste produced inside the stadium, suite areas and alumni tailgate through composting and recycling.

“We are excited to once again partner with Santee Cooper and Horry County Solid Waste Authority for the game,” said Matt Hogue, CCU director of athletics. “Sustainability is a hallmark principle at CCU and the Green Power/Zero-Waste Game provides a great way for athletics to help carry out the University’s commitment.”

“Promoting sustainable living and environmental awareness is paramount in Horry County Solid Waste Authority’s education programs,” commented Esther Murphy, Horry County Solid Waste Authority director of recycling and corporate affairs. “Our staff looks forward to this annual partnership and the opportunity to share the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle – with CCU fans and Santee Cooper customers.”

Santee Cooper and CCU are long-time partners in renewable energy. They partnered to put the first solar pavilion connected to the grid in the state on the shuttle stop on Chanticleer Drive East in November 2006. The solar panels produce about 16 kilowatts of power.

“Coastal Carolina has always been a great partner,” said Mike Poston, vice president of retail operations at Santee Cooper. “We’re excited that the Chanticleers are taking this opportunity to share the benefits of Green Power with their fans.”

Santee Cooper Green Power was born in 2001 in Chanticleer territory at Horry County Solid Waste Authority. Now, Santee Cooper has 28 megawatts of clean, renewable Green Power from sources including six landfill methane gas-generating stations, one wind turbine and nine solar projects. Proceeds from Green Power sales are used to build additional renewable generation and have been used to build 28 Green Power Solar School demonstration projects, 25 of which partner with South Carolina’s electric cooperatives.

Green Power is Green-e Energy certified, which means it meets the environmental and consumer protection standards set forth by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions. Learn more at www.green-e.org.
