New Solar Continues What We Started in 2006

Santee Cooper is expanding our solar energy mix. We’re adding 150 MWs in two projects already in the works. Under our new leadership team and its new generation plan, we’ll be adding a whole lot more.

The FACT is, Santee Cooper has offered solar to our customers longer than any other utility in the Palmetto State. Our first array went online in 2006. We offered the state’s first rooftop panel incentive program and the first community solar program too.

Between now and 2024, we’ll be adding another 1,000 megawatts (MW) to the mix. That means we’ll be increasing our solar capacity by over 500%. We’ve already issued a request for information and pricing for new solar farms, and we eagerly await those results.

Here’s another fact: solar isn’t the only renewable generation in Santee Cooper’s mix – we also have landfill gas, biomass and even a little wind generation. And yes, we were the first South Carolina utility to offer any kind of renewable generation to customers, almost two decades ago (in 2001). Renewable generation is part of our long-term commitment to environmental stewardship — to meet more of our customers' needs with renewable energy, energy efficiency and electricity that does not emit greenhouse gases.

Solar is playing an important role in Santee Cooper’s future, and as an added benefit it will reduce our power costs - meaning customers will enjoy a cleaner energy mix that costs less. And that’s a fact.
