Holiday Meal Prep Energy Hacks
Happy Thanksgiving week! As you dive headfirst into the season of family, friends, festivities and way too much food, are you thinking of the increased amount of energy you’re using to cook your holiday meals? Saving energy can mean saving money, which you can use on that perfect gift you’re eyeing for Christmas.
Here are some pointers on ways you can save some energy in the kitchen this cooking season:
- Microwave: Small but mighty, the microwave uses less energy than the stovetop or oven. Save energy by cooking or heating up your side dishes in the microwave.
- Close the refrigerator door: One of the worst energy offenders is keeping the fridge open while you’re trying to figure out what you want. Before you open the fridge, know what you’re looking for and don’t linger with the door open.
- Also keep the oven door closed, too: It’s tempting to open the door, check on the progress of your turkey or ham, and savor those mouthwatering aromas. Each time you open the oven door, though, it loses heat and must work harder to keep up. Instead, turn on the inside light and peer through the window.
- Turn off the oven early: For most meals, you can turn off the oven up to 10 minutes before the meal is set to be complete, and your oven will retain enough heat to finish the cooking. Just remember to follow Tip No. 3 above.
- Pick the right pan: Right-sizing your pans during cooking will help you save energy. There’s no need to boil a large pan of water for a small job. And be sure to put that pan on correct burner. If you can see the burner peeking out from under the pan, you’re losing heat and energy.
