How Cool is That?

So, it’s my second day on the job, and I have to be honest – this place is so cool! Change is rarely easy, but the warmth of the south and its people have made the transition for this former northerner quite enjoyable. The folks at Santee Cooper (and South Carolinians in general) have been amazing and have shown me firsthand that southern hospitality is not just a phrase, but truly a way of life.
I must admit though; the best part of my two-day long career was my trip to Old Santee Canal Park. This beautiful expanse of 195 acres is nestled behind our corporate headquarters and is the site of America’s first true canal. It’s also my new favorite hangout.
As I walked into the Interpretive Center, I was greeted with an impressive display of indigenous wildlife, some lifelike and some actually alive! From there, I was led outside to the boardwalk where I was nearly left speechless by the view.
This place has something for everyone, and I could go on and on about the Stony Landing House or the Little David torpedo boat (which launched the first successful torpedo boat attack in naval warfare). I could even tell you about the four miles of hiking trails; the canoe rentals; the museum; or the knowledgeable staff. But regardless of how talented of a writer I am, I could never do it justice. Instead, I’ll leave you for now with this picture of me petting an alligator. How cool is that?
